Healing Trauma: The Integration of Interpersonal Neurobiology and Christian Spiritual Formation

Summary

This workshop will explore the various ways in which the integration of interpersonal neurobiology and Christian spiritual formation lead to concrete means of healing interpersonal traumatic wounds. Special attention will be paid to the role of shame as well as Steven Porges’ polyvagal theory as neurobiological features of both trauma and healing.

Learning Objective 1

Identify the major elements of Interpersonal Neurobiology as applied to healing trauma.

Learning Objective 2

Describe the basic features of the neurobiology of shame and the polyvagal theory and apply them to regulating emotional responses to trauma.

Learning Objective 3

Employ spiritual practices that facilitate the regulation of shame and activate the social engage ment system of the brain as a means of healing trauma.

Psychopharmacology Update: New Medications and Implications for Treatment with the Advent of DSM5

This workshop will provide an overview of the most recently released and most popular; psychotropic medications. We will also discuss how the diagnostic changes in DSM5 may impact the treatment of depression, bipolar, ADHD and PTSD, as well as childhood-onset bipolar disorder.

Divergent Models of Trauma: Differences and Similarities of the HEART Model and Trauma-Focused CBT in working with Complex Trauma and Human Trafficking

This workshop will focus on a comparison of two models of therapy to treat complex trauma. The TF-CBT and the HEART models come from divergent perspectives in their theoretical base yet incorporate aspects of each in their application.

Summary

PREPARE / ENRICH is an online inventory containing 30 customized scales. The inventory has been administered to over 3 million engaged and married couples. This workshop will train counselors, pastors, and marriage mentors to administer the online PREPARE / ENRICH customized inventory to married or engaged couples, and will train facilitators to interpret and effectively give feedback to couples through exercises incorporating communication skill training.

Administer and interpret the PREPARE / ENRICH online assessment.

Provide useful feedback on PREPARE / ENRICH inventories to couples through the use of exercises.

Models of Intensive Treatment

Restoring the Shattered Self: The Treatment of Complex Trauma

Summary

A theoretical and treatment framework for working with victims of chronic, relational, or multiple traumas will be presented. While the material will be relevant to all types of trauma, emphasis will be placed on the treatment of adult survivors of child abuse, and those with dissociative disorders.

Discuss the differences between PTSD and more complex trauma reactions.

Discuss how to clinically manage posttraumatic and dissociative symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, terror, memory gaps, and physical pain

Identify common spiritual issues that survivors of complex trauma struggle with, and learn how to utilize spiritual resources, church support, and lay helpers in the healing process.

Contemporary Issues in Psychotherapy Ethics: Emerging Concerns

Summary

This workshop acquaints participants with several emerging ethical issues. Examples are: electronic modalities such as email, videoconferencing, and social networking, new CPT codes for use in billing insurance, and decisions about whether therapists should refer clients when the values of the client and the therapist differ markedly (in light of increasing concerns about “discrimination”). The workshop also considers the latest ethical issues related to addressing spiritual matters in therapy, and some current topics related to confidentiality.

Describe the major ethical concerns that must be addressed when one provides telemental health services.

Explain the arguments for and against referring clients when their marked value differences between client and therapist.

This workshop will develop six crucial disciplines that can enhance sexual lovemaking in marriage: making intentional commitments, recapturing child-likeness, growing confidently whole, celebrating the present moment, practicing acceptance and forgiveness, pursuing passion.

SUMMARY

The workshop will focus on diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and an overview of two core evidence-based psychotherapies for its treatment: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE). Empirical support for PTSD treatment specific to Veterans within the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as civilian applications will be given. The integration of specific Christian spiritual practices will be demonstrated.

Describe the symptoms of PTSD and recognize differences between PTSD and other Anxiety Disorders.

Summarize evidencedbased practices for the treatment of PTSD.

Through the Looking Glass: Working with Trauma

SUMMARY

Working with individuals struggling with psychotic experience invites us through the looking glass into a realm where trauma expresses itself through the symptoms that must be read when words fail. Using case illustrations, we will look at psychoanalytic conceptualizations that are useful to have in mind when working with trauma.

Articulate the importance of Lacan’s idea of “the subject caught by the other’s desire” for understanding the experience of severely traumatized individuals.
